Lancaster

A.V. Roe & Co Ltd - Chadderton
Avro Type 683 Lancaster B I (Prototype).
Ordered as the first of four planned prototypes under Contract # B.135521/40 in 1940. The first aircraft (BT308) used a Manchester airframe, modified for the installation of four Merlin X engines. The second (DG595) was to be representative of the initial Lancaster B I production model. The third (DT810) had Bristol Hercules VI radial engines installed and became the Lancaster B II prototype airframe. The fourth prototype (DT812) was never built.
A.V. Roe produced the major components at Chadderton, with assembly and flight testing being undertaken at Avro Woodford. The Avro factory at Yeadon, Yorkshire, both built and flew the aircraft at that site.
First flight 9 Jan 1941.
